What is Moulded Door Skin

Moulded skin doors are similar in construction to a flush door with the only exception of having a pre-moulded white primer coated HDF door skin as the top and bottom substrate. Moulded skin doors are the first choice of preference across various projects for the reason being they are durable, economical and aesthetic. Moulded skin doors are available in white primer or veneered finish depending on the application.

Termites spoil wooden interior decorations over the period of time. But Moulded Door Skins are resistant to termites, which results in a much longer lifespan, keeping its look and charm intact for years. These Moulded Door Skins are also borer-proof and hence a nice choice for traditional homes.

Easy To Clean And Maintain

Cleaning is an important factor in maintaining the look of your Moulded Door Skins. These Moulded Door Skins are designed in such a way that they can be easily cleaned using natural cleaners. A regular vacuum or a wet wipe are some easy ways to keep dirt away from your doors. So with no extra cost and much less effort, skin doors can retain its ever new look for many years.

Moisture Proof

Moulded Door Skins are quite prone to moisture. For instance, if a Moulded Door Skin is installed in your bathroom, it is immensely affected by the moisture content that results in excessive swelling of the wood. The moisture content in the air can also lead to the worn out look of the doors within years of its installation. However, such a situation is not experienced with Moulded Door Skins.

Easy To Install

Moulded Door Skins are relatively easy to install. They require just a few basic tools and expertise. Moulded Door Skins can be applied to the existing door using adhesives or nails. This is very convenient for DIY enthusiasts or those who would rather save on the installation cost.

Versatility

Moulded Door Skins come in various sizes and can be cut to fit any door size or shape. This flexibility allows for their application in a variety of doors, whether solid wood, hollow, or metal. Moreover, Moulded Door Skins can be painted or stained to match the desired color scheme, making them versatile enough for any interior or exterior design.

Materials Used in Moulded Door Skin

Wood Veneer
Wood veneer Moulded Door Skins are popular for their natural beauty and warmth. They are crafted from thin slices of real wood, typically sourced from various tree species like oak, maple, or cherry. Wood veneer Moulded Door Skins provide an elegant, classic appearance and can be stained or finished to highlight the wood’s grain.

Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF)
MDF Moulded Door Skins are composed of wood fibers, resin, and wax that are compressed and heated to create a dense, stable material. MDF Moulded Door Skins offer a smooth and uniform surface that is easy to paint or laminate, allowing for a wide range of design possibilities.

High-Density Fiberboard (HDF)
Similar to MDF, HDF Moulded Door Skins are made from wood fibers and resin but with higher density. This makes HDF Moulded Door Skins more robust and suitable for applications that require added durability.

Plywood
Plywood Moulded Door Skins are constructed from thin layers of wood veneer glued together in a cross-grain pattern. This design enhances the door’s strength and stability. Plywood Moulded Door Skins can be stained or painted to achieve different finishes.

How to Maintain Moulded Door Skin
01.

Avoid Using Abrasive Agents

Using abrasive cleaning agents such as black soap, scouring pads, powders, or other cleaning products with strong alkaline or acid bases should be avoided. These agents can cause significant damage to the surface of the Moulded Door Skin. It's important to choose cleaning agents that are gentle on the material to ensure the Moulded Door Skin's longevity.

02.

Use Mild Cleaners For Tough Stains

Chemical substances can be harmful to the laminate surface if exposed for prolonged periods. It is crucial to avoid excessive use of strong cleaning agents. For tough stains, it is recommended to use a wet cloth and clean the surface until no water droplets remain, or opt for a mild cleaner. However, even with mild cleaners, it is advisable not to use them regularly. Instead, organic solvents or non-scratch liquid cleaners are highly recommended for effectively removing tough stains from the Moulded Door Skin surface.

03.

Regularly Wipe The Surface

One of the easiest ways to maintain Moulded Door Skins is by regularly wiping the surface. This simple maintenance task does not damage the laminate surface and prevents the buildup of stains. It is recommended to clean the Moulded Door Skin at least twice a week using a soft, lint-free cloth. By incorporating this practice into your cleaning routine, you can ensure that your Moulded Door Skin remains in pristine condition.

04.

Avoid Prolonged Exposure To Sunlight

Sunlight contains UV rays that can cause the shine of the Moulded Door Skin surface to fade over time. To prevent this, it is important to minimize the door laminates' direct contact with sunlight. Using curtains or blinds can serve as a protective barrier and shield the Moulded Door Skins from prolonged exposure to sunlight. This precaution will help maintain the Moulded Door Skin's original appearance and prevent premature discoloration.

How to replace Moulded Door Skin

Step 1.
We used a clean, open work area for this job and rested the door on a good, level stand. The next step was to grind the crease off of the old Moulded Door Skin. We used a 40-to-50-grit grinding wheel and were very careful not to eat into the door frame. Spot welds can also be drilled or ground out on the door’s backside. Hammering with a chisel, however, will likely damage the delicate frame.

Step 2.
Once the crease was ground off and welds were removed, we gently started prying off the Moulded Door Skin with a chisel and grinding away the last little bits. Soon the badly damaged skin peeled right off, revealing that the frame needed a little bit of repair.

Step 3.
The door frame’s surface must be absolutely flat and smooth to receive the new skin, so we cleaned up any sharp edges and the remains of the spot welds. We then painted the raw metal with self-etching weld-thru primer.

Step 4.
Next, we test-fit the new skin. For better adhesion, we ground away a bit of the new skin’s primer—just the areas that would attach to the door frame. We test-fit the skin for a second time, then test-fit the entire door on the car.

Step 5.
Time to apply glue. We laid down a bead of Panel Bonding Adhesive along the entire Moulded Door Skin and door frame. A glue brush smoothed it out into an even layer.

Step 6.
Moulded Door Skin, meet door frame. Clamps can be useful at this stage—just make sure they don’t damage the door. Pieces of wooden paint stirrer sticks sandwiched between the clamps will help protect your work.

Step 7.
To fully attach the Moulded Door Skin, we used a special door-skin hammer and dolly designed to get into the awkward areas that this job produces. These tools are available online or at any auto body supply house. We started at the top and gently hammered our way around the door, tapping just hard enough to fold the Moulded Door Skin around the frame. Then we went around the door again, making sure the Moulded Door Skin was perfectly flat against the frame.

Step 8.
Our door is as good as new. We checked the fit on the car before the glue dried to make sure none of the pieces had shifted. From here the door could be primed, cured of any slight imperfections, then sanded and painted.

A: Hollow core doors' outside shells are thin and easily damaged. The surfaces of veneered hollow-core doors are only about 1/8-inch thick. This thin veneer does not allow for much more than a light sanding, if even that.

Q: How to Replace a Moulded Door Skin?

A: There are two main steps required when replacing a Moulded Door Skin. It’s important to apply the foam before the film to prevent noise and maintain a watertight structure because the film should be laid over the foam section.
Applying the foam: Pull out enough foam material from the dispensing box and lay it on a flat surface ensuring the paper grid side is facing up. It can also help to lay the old Moulded Door Skin film over the top and trace around it if you have it to hand. If you don’t have the old Moulded Door Skin film, place the skin against the door and mark it out whilst on the car door. Remove the old liner and you should be left with a good guideline for the desired shape. You can then cut the film, being sure to follow the marked-out lines as closely as possible. After the shape is cut out, you can begin fitting it to the car door. Peel off the release liner to expose the adhesive, position this on the door in the correct position and press firmly into place.
Applying the film: Applying our Moulded Door Skin Replacement Film is a simple process. All that’s required is to cut a section to size, fit our Refit Tape around the door, and position the film carefully to seal off the open area of the door. Our Refit Tape is the best product to use because of the double-sided adhesive and flexibility of the tape, allowing it to bend around the curves and contours of the inner door panel.
